Avoid This: Carpet Wet All Week

Here’s a note I read on Nextdoor.com

I used XXXXXXX (name omitted) Steam Clean. Will NOT use them again. They left our carpet waaaaay too wet. They came on a Monday, it was still damp on Friday morning. We also had a strange smell from our master bedroom. The owner came out Thursday that week (I called Wednesday afternoon to report wet floor) and proceeded to tell me this was “dormant odor” that he was happy to clean it again but didnt think it would resolve anything. When I pointed out the dampness still, he just said it felt like “residue” to him. A worker came the next morning, Friday, and checked for moisture with a tool. Sure enough, moisture!!!! Grrrrr! The worker cleaned it using special treatment that they used in houses during the Mendocino Fire. This was week before last. There is still a faint smell in our bedroom. I’m beyond irritated. I have had carpets cleaned 1x to 2x a year.. This is the FIRST time I have ever had an issue. The owner told me I must have spilled milk as he was saying he could smell the odor. I have a non-verbal 10yr old. I am VERY cautious about food and drink. We do not drink milk. The worker that came out told me his superviors TOLD HIM to clean it again and go over it for dryness/leave fans/etc because the last time it was too wet!!! Couldn’t believe it! The worker told me knew what the odor was. NOT dormant odor. He said “it is the same musty smell you get when you leave clothes in the washer too long. This happened because the carpets had too much moisture.” I have not had this experience but he DID tell me it was NOT dormant odor. Would NOT recommend them. I told the owner I regret calling them for service as now I have this issue and may have to REPLACE carpet.

My Response

Before you replace the carpet, I recommend pulling up the carpet and pad and letting it dry underneath. If there is mold it can be treated there. A restoration service can do this for you. The carpet cleaner should pay for it. That’s why they carry insurance.

I’ve heard many horror stories like this. This is one of the risks of the traditional truck-mount steam cleaning system. Over-wetting can happen, especially when the cleaning tech in inexperienced.

For future reference, there is a better way to clean carpet. A very low moisture (VLM) system such as the one I use keeps the cleaning solution on the carpet where the soil is. Instead of jetting more water into the carpet to agitate the soil loose, we use a terry-towel pad and an oscillating machine to agitate and extract the solution and soil. The carpet backing and pad remains dry throughout the process. Carpet is dry in 2 hours and spots don’t return (another problem with the traditional method). No fans are needed even in wet weather.

What a Difference! Before and After

Wow! Check out these photos – Before and After Advanced Dry Carpet Care visited this home.

All we had to do was get rid of the cat. 😉

Before and After Carpet Cleaning

Don’t worry. The cat’s fine. She was a delight to work around.

This carpet restoration took place without gallons of water or toxic chemicals. We pre-treated spots and scrubbed this family room carpet with a counter-rotating brush machine (CRB) to loosen the soil. We then removed the solution and soil with our unique, low-moisture Teri-Towel System.

The results? Clean carpet and dry in 2 hours, cat went back to her nap and the customer was so happy he wrote this review:

Will a Home Carpet Steam Cleaner Help?

Customers ask, “Will it help if we buy a home steam cleaner for cleaning up accidents?”

home carpet steam cleaners

A customer gave up on their home steam cleaner and called me. These home carpet cleaners are sold by Bissell, Dirt Devil, Hoover and others.

I bought a Dirt Devil carpet steam cleaner when we moved into our brand new home and started our family. This is before I became a professional carpet cleaner. We ordered a carpet upgrade and filled the home with a spotless blue carpet. I thought this home carpet cleaner would help us keep our carpet clean when our babies would vomit or when our little dog would be too finicky to go to the bathroom in the rain.

My first surprise was finding out the machine did not use steam! It didn’t even heat the water. Why would I expect steam? Maybe because the machine was advertised as a “steam cleaner.” My next discovery was that there was very little removal of the offending material. What was removed often got clogged in the narrow slits of the vacuum. The more I passed over the spot, the more water and carpet cleaning solution I was adding to the carpet, leaving a soggy mess.

I tried using my carpet cleaner to clean a whole room of carpet. It was ineffective in removing spots and left my carpet soggy wet. It took a few days and fans to get the carpet dry – and it was still dirty. Some spots that looked clean initially, returned after a week or two. Spots returned.

I also discovered that if I didn’t clean the machine after each use, it got very ugly and smelly. And if I was going through the trouble of cleaning the machine, I might as well just get on my hands and knees and blot up the spot without the machine. It was less trouble.

Why home carpet cleaners are ineffective

Here’s what the Host Professional Cleaners Association wrote in a recent newsletter:

Consumers as well as professionals many times fail in spot removal by failing to prevent spot wick-back. We have been taught incorrectly to start by spraying spot removers directly onto the carpet spot …thus flushing the spot down the fibers and to, or into, the carpet backing. Then as the carpet dries, wicking naturally occurs. The spot reappears. Deep cleaning has not happened…only redistribution of the spot deeper into the carpet to come back again another day.
